Countdown Timer

Set any date and time — a wedding, launch, flight, or deadline — and watch a live days/hours/minutes/seconds countdown to it.

The holiday pages count down to fixed events; this timer counts down to yours. Enter any future date and time, add an optional label, and the page ticks down live in days, hours, minutes, and seconds. When the moment arrives it tells you plainly instead of flipping into negative numbers.

How to use this calculator

  1. Write a label for the moment (optional but satisfying when it hits zero).
  2. Pick the target date and time in the picker — it uses your local time zone.
  3. Press Start countdown.
  4. Watch days, hours, minutes, and seconds tick down; press Reset anytime to set a different moment.

The formula

Remaining time = target date/time − current time, split into whole days, then hours, minutes, and seconds.

Worked example

Set the target to January 1, 2027 at midnight and start it on October 16, 2026: the timer opens at 77 days and counts down through the hours, minutes, and seconds to the New Year — the same 77 days the Days Until New Year page shows for that date.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start a countdown?

Type an optional label, pick the target date and time, and press Start countdown. The page updates several times a second, so the seconds hand never looks frozen. You can leave the tab open on a second screen — a common setup for launches, streams, and classroom events.

What happens when the countdown reaches zero?

The display switches to an 'It's time!' state with your label rather than counting into negative numbers. You can then press Reset and set a new target. The timer uses your device's clock, so make sure your computer or phone time is correct if the exact moment matters.

Does the countdown keep running if I close the tab?

No — and it does not need to. The countdown is computed from the target date and your clock, not accumulated in the page, so if you reopen the page and enter the same date and time you get the correct remaining time immediately. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere.

Can I count down to a time today?

Yes. Pick today's date with a later time and the day figure simply reads 0 while hours, minutes, and seconds tick down. If you pick a moment that has already passed, pressing Start shows the 'It's time!' state straight away.

What's the difference between this and the days-until pages?

The days-until pages are pre-built for named events (Christmas, Easter, tax day) and know how to compute next year's date automatically. This timer is for one-off personal moments — a wedding, a product launch, a flight — that you set yourself, down to the minute.
