Online Timer

Set minutes and seconds and count down with a progress bar, a clear 'Time's up' state, and a sound when it finishes.

A simple countdown timer for the everyday jobs: steeping tea, timing a workout interval, giving a presentation, or running a classroom activity. Set minutes and seconds, press Start, and the big display plus progress bar keep you honest from across the room. At zero it plays a sound and switches to an unmistakable Time's up state.

Set a time and press Start

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter minutes and seconds (for over an hour, put it all in minutes — 90 is fine).
  2. Press Start and watch the big display and the gold progress bar.
  3. Pause if you need to, Resume to continue, Reset to clear.
  4. At zero, listen for the beeps and look for the Time's up state.

The formula

Total seconds = minutes × 60 + seconds. Remaining time = scheduled end time − current clock time, shown as minutes:seconds (or hours:minutes:seconds past one hour).

Worked example

Set 5 minutes and 30 seconds and the timer runs 330 seconds, displaying 05:30 at the start and draining the progress bar to empty exactly as the beeps sound at zero.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I set the timer?

Type the minutes and seconds you want (seconds must be 0–59), then press Start. The total must be above zero — a 5 minute 30 second timer is stored as 330 seconds and counted down from there. While it runs, the inputs lock so an accidental tap can't change the duration mid-count.

What happens when the timer finishes?

The display pulses with a gold border, the status reads 'Time's up!', and a short three-beep sound plays if your device allows audio. You can start the same duration again with one press, or Reset and set a different time.

Why didn't I hear the alarm?

Browsers block sound from pages you haven't interacted with, and devices on silent or with the tab muted won't play it either. Because you pressed Start yourself, the beep is normally allowed — if you still hear nothing, check the tab mute and media volume. The visual Time's up state always shows regardless of sound.

Does the timer stay accurate in a background tab?

Yes. The remaining time is always computed from the moment the timer should end and your device's clock, not by counting screen refreshes. A throttled background tab may update the digits less often, but when you return, the displayed time is correct to the second.

Can I set a timer longer than an hour?

Yes — just put the whole duration in the minutes box (90 minutes works fine). Once the remaining time passes an hour the display switches to an hours:minutes:seconds format automatically so nothing is lost.
